Sulphur Springs Police arrested two Sulphur Springs men this week in connection with a Freeman Street assault.

Joseph Rashad Washington (HCSO jail photo)

Joseph Rashad Washington, 27, was taken into custody at 2:03 p.m. Aug. 26, and Trondamion Andrezhel Cleveland, 28, at 3:16 p.m. Aug. 26, on one second-degree felony aggravated assault warrant each, in connection with the Freeman Street assault, according to police and arrest reports.

The pair is accused of what police described as a “brutal assault” of a man around 12:30 p.m. Aug. 18, in the 700 block of Freeman Street.

Investigators believe based on the information obtained during the course of the police investigation, that the victim was grabbed, pushed into an apartment, assaulted, then left injured.

The victim reportedly sustained blunt force trauma to the head, resulting in approximately 20 stitches, and a deep knife wound on the leg resulting in approximately 30 more stitches, according to Sulphur Springs Police Det. Sgt. Jason Reneau.

Trondamion Andrezhel Cleveland (HCSO jail photo)

Police initially began working the case as a suspected aggravated robbery, because “it had all the hallmark characteristics of a robbery,” the investigator noted. However, it was later determined nothing was taken during the assault, so police proceeded with the case as an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

After the first day of investigation, police asked for anyone who might have seen anything or have any any information about the case to contact police.

“Once we were able to get some information from the public and get positive IDs on the suspects, I got warrants that day, one on each, then we went over and served it,” Reneau said.

One of the men allegedly attempted to flee back into the residence, so SWAT team members breached the door. Both men were taken into custody Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 26, according to the detective.

Both Cleveland and Washington remained in Hopkins County jail Friday, Aug. 28. Bond was set at $50,000 each on the charge.

Cleveland had just been released from Hopkins County jail Feb. 7, 2020. He was jailed Oct. 22, 2019, on an unauthorized use of a vehicle charge and warrant for violation of parole, according to jail reports.

Aug. 26 was the fourth time Washington has been booked into Hopkins County jail in 2020. He was arrested Feb. 1 on warrants for failure to appear and failure to maintain financial responsibility; and for not taking care of two no driver’s license charges, a failure to maintain financial responsibility charge, a failure to appear charge, a failure to signal a turn or lane change, and an open container-passenger charges. He was also arrested March 7 for pedestrian walking the wrong way; and June 4 for resisting arrest, search or transport and disorderly conduct, according to jail reports.

SCU Lt. Mark Estes and Sgt. Joe Scott alleged several purchases of meth were made from Hodges. During the investigation, a large amount of methamphetamine was seized. The SCU investigators obtained and served the 36-year-old Yantis man at the county jail Sept. 9 with a warrant for manufacture or delivery of 4 grams or more but less than 200 grams of a Penalty Group 1 controlled substance at the county jail.

Hopkins County Sheriff’s officers also reportedly served Hodges Sept. 3 with a warrant for theft of property valued at $300,000 or less, according to arrest and jail reports.

Hodges has been in custody since his arrest by SCU officers Wednesday, Sept. 2. The SCU officers reported obtaining a warrant for Hodges’ arrest and were conducting surveillance, watching for his vehicle in an effort to make an arrest.

Estes and Scott reported first seeing the vehicle being driven by Hodges around 1:25 p.m. Sept. 2 on College Street. Officers attempted a traffic stop, but the car continued into the 200 block of Morris Drive before stopping. The driver, identified by officers as Hodges, then jumped out of the car and ran. Estes and Scott, along with SSPD Officer Sean Hoffman who had responded to assist, chased after the man. Hodges ran through a yard and jumped two fences before being caught in a field behind a residence, the SCU officers alleged.

Hodges allegedly had a baggy containing 4.54 grams of suspected hydrocodone pills in his pocket and had a bag with 18.73 grams of packaged suspected methamphetamine and 1.38 grams of packaged suspected heroin in it. A 5-gallon bucket found in the trunk of the car Hodges excited on Sept. 2 reportedly contained 4.85 pounds of marijuana as well, according to the SCU officers.

Hodges arrest on Sept. 2 marked the second time in less than 2 weeks and third time in the last 2 months that Hodges was booked into Hopkins County jail on a controlled substance charge.

Approximately 60 law enforcement officials, firefighters and fire academy recruits, and emergency services personnel were joined by a number of community members at Hopkins County Fire Department’s Station 20 Friday morning at Hopkins County’ third annual 9/11 tribute, held to remember all who died in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

Flags flown at half-staff in honor of those who died on Sept. 11, 2001

All law enforcement and emergency responders lined one side of the drive in front of the station. Fire in Texas academy recruits line the other side. Emergency personnel also lined the sidewalk around the flag poles. Sulphur Springs Fire Department raise the ladder on their tour truck to fly an US flag from it.

The collaborative effort, coordinated by Rodney Caudle, included bagpipe music.

The Way Bible Church Pastor Joel Tiemeyer offered prayer for healing for the state and nation, thanks for all who have given their lives to keep others safe and acknowledgement of the sacrifice made 19 years ago.

The Texas and US flags were raised, the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States flag recited.

The Fire In Texas academy recruits joined others across the country and state who have lowered the US and state flag to half-staff on Sept. 11, designated Patriots Day, to honor those killed in the 9/11 attacks, including first responders who entered the Twin Towers after the planes crashed, those who responded at Ground Zero and elsewhere to try to help, knowing the risk.

As is tradition for fire and law enforcement, a radio announcement was made. The bell on the county’s fire engine rang, three sets of five, an indication that a firefighter has not returned home. This honors the courage, commitment and sacrifice of the 412 emergency responders, including 343 New York City firefighters, 16 police officers, 8 emergency medical technicians with private EMS services and 1 fire patrol personnel who did not make it home to their families on Sept. 11, 2001, but instead paid the ultimate sacrifice giving their lives in the line of duty.

Tiemeyer closed the tribute offering thanks to and prayer for the safety of the many first responders who put their lives on the line daily answering the call to serve their community.
